UH graduate student, Mr. Varun Prakash, has a paper accepted by the 14th ACM/IFIP/USENIX International Middleware Conference. The paper, "Back to the Future: Using Magnetic Tapes in Cloud Based Storage Infrastructures", discusses how to integrate custom tape libraries and middleware with big data oriented cloud infrastructure. The annual ACM/IFIP/USENIX Middleware conference is a major forum for the discussion of innovations and recent advances in the design, implementation, experimentation, deployment, and usage of middleware systems. The acceptance rate of this year's Middleware conference is 17%.

Mr. Gabriel Ohlson, a scholar of NSF funded REU program (NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) won second place in REU poster presentation.

Mr. Varun Prakash will spend his fall in Samsung Telecommunications America, San Jose. Mr. Prakash will work in the areas of Android kernel development and mobile device security.

Mr. Ziyi Liu successfully defended his master thesis. Mr. Liu has been the embedded system guru and hardware troubleshooter of our lab. During his time in UH, he contributed to six conference paper publications.

Dr. Shi received a two-year, $0.876M award from Cyber Security Division, Department of Homeland Security for research and development in smartphone security. The two year research project will focus on solving the fundamental challenges between smartphone usability and security with innovative approaches. The project was one of the 34 funded projects, selected from total of 1000+ white papers and over 200 project proposal submissions.

A paper entitled CPU Transparent Protection of OS Kernel and Hypervisor Integrity with Programmable DRAM and written by Ziyi Liu, a third year PhD student at the Computer Science Department of the University of Houston was accepted by the 40th Annual International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA 2013, http://isca2013.eew.technion.ac.il/).(external link) ISCA is a top tier and the premier forum for new ideas and experimental results in Computer Architecture. The acceptance rate of ISCA papers was typically below 20%. Ziyi’s paper was selected from a total of 288 submissions.
